DOOMED STORYLINES

Unpublished Stories

During the five year run of the 2099 imprint, not all stories that were written and/or drawn saw print. Over the years some pages have surfaced, giving fans a glimpse of stories that almost were. Many of these were inventory stories; sometimes called filler issues because they are used to "fill-in" when for whatever reason the regular issue isn't ready. The process of creating comics is very much like an assembly line. Work on the stories listed below was stopped at differing stages along the line. Therefore the stories listed are overwhelmingly incomplete. Some were penciled but not inked. Some were penciled and inked but not scripted or lettered. At least one was completely finished (penciled, inked, scripted, lettered and colored) but simply not published. In any case, all of these are fascinating examples of stories that could have been. I've separated the stories by where I think they probably would have appeared had they been published. I stress probably because bear in mind that any and all of these stories could have been fair game to have appeared in 2099 Unlimited. For example, the Spider-Man 2099 story, Night of the Impaler was originally intended as a filler for the monthly Spider-Man 2099 series as evidenced by the fully pasted-up unused alternate cover. Ultimately it made it into 2099 Unlimited #9. With that said, the placement of these stories is entirely hypothetical on my part.

Unpublished Stories

Writer - John Francis Moore
Pencil Art - Arthur 'Art' Nichols

Cover Color Art - Mike Thomas

Notes:

  • This story sees Doom 2099 going on a Wizard of Oz inspired adventure. Given that Fortune, Xandra, and Wire are all present, this would have been an inventory story written possibly for the first year. Although the cover is dated 1994 curiously enough. If I had to place the story somewhere I would place this between Doom 2099 # 10 and #11. Wire and Doom are free of cyberspace and its prior to Xandra leaving for Wakanda. But then I suppose you could also place it between issues 4 and 5. Any later than #11 and you have Fortune looking for her brother, Xandra in Wakanda, and Doom and Wire on their own. This may explain why the story was never used. But that's pure speculation on my part.

  • The story was fully penciled and inked, though not lettered. The art is by Arthur 'Art' Nichols who provided the artwork for the one-page 2099 teasers seen in Marvel Age and also Punisher 2099 #12.

  • Scans of the fully penciled and inked art used to be available courtesy of Doomscribe, who first hosted them on his website the Den of Madness.

Title - Unknown

Writer - Unknown

  • This story was penciled by Gabriel Morrissette  (who penciled "Eye Spy" from the Spider-Man 2099 Special) and inked by Keith Williams (inker on Ravage 2099). The story reached the lettering stage, but was not colored. The writer is unknown. In my correspondence with Gabriel, he remembers this story being written by Elliiot S! Maggin. Elliot however has no recollection of the story.

  • The story further develops Lyla's character, specifically her love for Miguel. Lyla admitted that, were she human, she would be in love with Miguel in Spider-Man 2099 #11.

Title - Kill Riff

Writer - Don DeBrandt

Pencils - Gabriel Morrissette

Writer - Unknown

Pencils - David Klein

Inks - David Klein

Notes:

  • Spider-Man 2099 faces off against a bug-eyed villain. The story was penciled and inked by David Klein who also provided art for the Lachryma story in 2099 Unlimited and Doom 2099 #31. I don't think the story reached the lettering stage.

Writer - Dan Slott
Art - N/A

Notes:

  • Dan Slott was asked via Formspring in November of 2011 about any Spider-Man 2099 stories he may written but were not published. His response was: "I remember one that was bought, but sat in a drawer and never got drawn. It involved a new Alchemax-designed prison called the Big House where villains were shrunk down with Pym particles. And if that sounds familiar... it's because I used it in SHE-HULK Vol.1 #5. :-) And it eventually found its way into the Earth's Mightiest Heroes cartoon... and possibly Super Hero Squad."

Title - The Big Collar

  • While working a Public Eye contract, Jake helps to clear a building of drug dealers peddling a gene-altering narcotic called Wrangle. The leader of the gang, Daddy Wronglegs, is a multi-armed monstrosity. Wronglegs wounds Jake before being subdued. Unknown to Jake, the wounds mean that he has been infected with the same gene-altering toxin. Jake's race to track down the source of the drug now becomes a search for a way to cure himself of the drug's effects.

  • Story continues in "Strange Blood"

  • The story was fully penciled, inked, and lettered. There is a colorist credit, however as of this writing, I've never seen any color guides for this story.

Notes:

  • When the wife of a fellow Public Eye officer is viciously murdered, Jake suspects the husband. The trail leads him into conflict with a secret cabal of high ranking citizens who lead double lives as Shades.

  • Story was fully penciled, inked, and lettered. Mighten also completed a cover for the issue. You can see the cover here where it is being incorrectly identified as the "1st version" of the cover to Punisher 2099 #1. This is of course rubbish.

Title - A Wanderer Unknown
Writer - Terry Kavanagh
Art - Alcatena

Notes:

  • A story featuring Radian from Doom 2099 #15-18. This is meant to immediately follow the events of that issue. Since the story doesn't feature any of the regular cast and is essentially a Radian story, this was probably meant to either be a back-up for a double-sized issue (a-la the Feng Huang story in #25) or (most likely) a story that would have featured in 2099 Unlimited. The story is written by Terry Kavanagh whose published 2099 Unlimited story focused on Doom 2099. It should be noted that Radian's survival was hinted at in #18 despite the "Death of Radian" proclamation on the cover. Also in the letters page of Doom 2099 # 20 where we were told "you haven't seen the last of Radian," not to mention a statement in the letters page of Spider-Man 2099 stating they had just received the first few pages of this story from Alcatena.

  • In this story Radian provides a different explanation for his presence on Earth, one that contradicts the explanation given in Doom 2099 #18. In Doom 2099 #18 he states he is working for the Y'Lestja. In this story it seems like his own people sent him to Earth to await the Y'lestja so he could provide them with the experiences of his race. No mention is made of his preparing the way for the Y'lestja's communion with the human race or acting as their agent.

  • You can view 21 pages of this story from my collection here.

Title - Unknown

Writer - Pat Mills & Tony Skinner

Pencils -  Luke Ross
Inks - Keith Williams

Notes:

  • This Public Enemy story was slated to appear in 2099 Unlimited #9 but ultimately went unpublished. The story introduces Dragonrider as a new opponent for the Public Enemy. The Public Eye hires Dragonrider as an outside contractor to take down the Public Enemy. Dragonrider specializes in using mob violence to hide assassinations. He's hired because of his experience with mob dynamics. The story was penciled, inked, and lettered.

Title - Unknown

Writer - Unknown

Pencils -  Gino De Cicco
Inks - Bob Wiacek

Notes:

  • The story follows an all-new 2099 character. The dialogue and letter 'H' on the character's costume seem to indicate that the character's name is The Hooligan. The story was fully penciled, inked, and lettered. In it, The Hooligan runs afoul of Coquette who seems to run the community known as "Undead Town."

Title - Unknown

Writer - Michael Jan Friedman
Pencils -  Jim Fern

Inks - Tim Tuohy

Notes:

  • Galahad was introduced in 2099 Unlimited #6. The story ended with the promise that "Galahad will rise again! And soon!" The next issue box of 2099 Unlimited #8 also makes mention of the story. So chances are this was originally slated to appear in 2099 Unlimited #9. However the character did not appear again until 2099 AD: Apocalypse where he was killed off.

  • A page from the unpublished story was featured in Marvel Vision #20.

  • Thanks to inker Tim Tuohy, you can see the fully penciled and inked art from 10 page story here. Once again my sincere thanks to Tim for sharing these scans!

Title - Unknown

Writer - Ian Edington
Art -  David Klein

Notes:

  • The letters page of 2099 Unlimited #7 mentions that Ian was working on a second Lachryma story. It was penciled & inked by David Klein.

Writer - Karl Kesel

Art - Adam Huges

Notes:

  • In an interview with writer Karl Kesel, he revealed that the reason he received a special thanks in issues of Spider-Man 2099, was that he had created the character of Strange 2099 for a 10 page story for 2099 Unlimited. He wrote the story, while Adam Hughes designed the character. It's unknown if the story reached the penciling stage. Check out the interview with Karl, as well as a glimpse at some sketches of the character by Adam Hughes.

Writer - Ian Edington
Art -  Luke Ross

Inks - Scott Koblish (partial)

Notes:

  • The letters page of 2099 Unlimited #7 mentions that Ian was also working on a Chernobyl solo story. The story was fully penciled, but inking was not completed.

  • You can view 8 pages of this story from my collection here.

Title - Doc Houdini: Breakout

Writer - Don Debrandt

  • Gabriel Morrissette very kindly shared copies of his un-inked artwork for this story and I've them posted here.

Unmade Proposals

Daredevil 2099

Read the proposal by Mark Waid here.

Apocalypse 2099 [Captain America, Ironman, and Avengers 2099]

In 1994 Grant Morrison and Mark Millar pitched a massive overhaul of the 2099 universe. You can read a summary of the proposal here.

Black Panther 2099 On his official website, Warren Ellis describes the pitch. Here is the relevant passage:

"I remember being asked to pitch for a mooted BLACK PANTHER 2099 book at Marvel. The book actually never happened at all. I imagine none of the pitches were up to snuff, and they just killed the idea. I dimly remember mine being a sort of terrifying “Fear Of A Black Planet”/Huey P Newton thing, with Black Panther Cells run from Marvel’s fictional African country Wakanda destabilising corporate-run America. I think I used some of the stuff in there for my later DOOM 2099 sequence. I wasn’t happy at doing the foot race: I got paid, and my foot hadn’t been in the door that long, and I supposed this was just the way things were done. But I had a feeling that maybe it wasn’t the best way to do things."

Warren Ellis

Black Panther 2099 In an interview, Evan Dorkin recalls how he turned down an opportunity to write a Black Panther 2099 series. He also mentions being offered X-Men 2099. Below is only a abridged excerpt. You can read the full interview here.

You can also see the only surviving art from his proposal here.

"I turned down a few mainstream jobs that might have done well for me back in the 90′s. [I was offered] a gig to co-develop and co-write X-Men 2099, and write a Black Panther 2099 series...In the case of the Black Panther 2099 job, I didn’t feel I could pull off writing the African characters convincingly and accurately. At least not back then. Even now, I’d only attempt something like that after doing some massive amounts of research. I had an overview for a 12-issue arc, which I liked very much, [with] a new origin for a female descendant of T’Challa, a supporting cast, [and] villains...."

Evan Dorkin
Artist of the Month: Evan Dorkin (Interviewed by Josh Jones)

Interview on Comicattack.net  5/15/2010

Fight Man 2099 On his own website, Evan Dorkin revealed that he pitched a 10 page story about his Fight Man character.

"A "Fight-Man 2099" 10 page story was almost done for 2099 Unlimited, Joey Cavalieri okayed the pitched idea, but I never had the time to do the story -- which was about F-M finally getting paroled because it was cruel to keep him in jail for a century after the end of the first book."

Knight Raven 2099 A 2099 version of the Marvel UK character, Night Raven was proposed, but ultimately went unmade. Written and drawn by Simon Wyatt, Simon has posted four pages of art from the proposal on his Deviant Art account. Check them out here.

"If I remember it correctly, it was set in an apocalyptic future version of Paris, involved an armoured (K)Night Raven (cybernetic as tho' immortal he had lost some limbs in battle, possibly by an explosion or cut off by an encounter with someone possessing adamantium :-)

The premise was that Knight Raven was sent on a quest to locate the illegitimate daughter of China White (Yi Yang) by the future Paris resistance. Yi Yi (Yang's daughter) held the genetic key to finally destroying both Yi Yang and Knight Raven's immortality, bringing him peace and ridding Paris of the criminal tyranny of Yi Yang who had held the city in thrall employing her Cyber Ninjas."

Captain America 2099

Brazilian writer and artist Emir Ribeiro pitched his own version of Captain America 2099. He wrote and drew two pages for his proposal. The second of the two pages he drew surfaced at auction, unfortunately I didn't see it in time to bid. The website credits the artwork to Mark Millar, but I emailed Emir and he identified the artwork as his. You can still see the auction page with the image there. Enjoy it while it lasts, it will probably be gone one day.
