Unpublished Stories |
During the five year run of the 2099 imprint, not all stories that were written and/or drawn saw print. Over the years some pages have surfaced, giving fans a glimpse of stories that almost were. Many of these were inventory stories; sometimes called filler issues because they are used to "fill-in" when for whatever reason the regular issue isn't ready. The process of creating comics is very much like an assembly line. Work on the stories listed below was stopped at differing stages along the line. Therefore the stories listed are overwhelmingly incomplete. Some were penciled but not inked. Some were penciled and inked but not scripted or lettered. At least one was completely finished (penciled, inked, scripted, lettered and colored) but simply not published. In any case, all of these are fascinating examples of stories that could have been. I've separated the stories by where I think they probably would have appeared had they been published. I stress probably because bear in mind that any and all of these stories could have been fair game to have appeared in 2099 Unlimited. For example, the Spider-Man 2099 story, Night of the Impaler was originally intended as a filler for the monthly Spider-Man 2099 series as evidenced by the fully pasted-up unused alternate cover. Ultimately it made it into 2099 Unlimited #9. With that said, the placement of these stories is entirely hypothetical on my part. |

If anyone wants to
use information from this section of the site please provide the proper
credit / citation. I'd much rather you link back to the site than copy/paste
the content or take the images and throw them on a torrent.
Please note, I
don't own all the art on display here. Where the actual creator/owner have posted
the pages, I link to their site.
If you are
the owner and for whatever reason wish the pages to be removed,
email me.
Likewise, if you
would like to contribute better scans of pages here, or if you have
something not listed here,
email me!
Creators, if you
worked on something here, I would love to hear your recollections of the
work you did and post your comments on these or anything else you
contributed to the 2099 universe.
Email
me!
My thanks to everyone who has
granted me permission to post links to their collections! Thank you all for
sharing!

Daredevil 2099 |
Read the proposal by Mark Waid here.
|
Apocalypse 2099 [Captain America, Ironman, and Avengers 2099] |
In 1994 Grant Morrison and Mark Millar pitched a massive overhaul of the 2099 universe. You can read a summary of the proposal here.
|
Black Panther 2099 | On his official website, Warren Ellis describes the pitch. Here is the relevant passage: "I remember being asked to pitch for a mooted BLACK PANTHER 2099 book at Marvel. The book actually never happened at all. I imagine none of the pitches were up to snuff, and they just killed the idea. I dimly remember mine being a sort of terrifying “Fear Of A Black Planet”/Huey P Newton thing, with Black Panther Cells run from Marvel’s fictional African country Wakanda destabilising corporate-run America. I think I used some of the stuff in there for my later DOOM 2099 sequence. I wasn’t happy at doing the foot race: I got paid, and my foot hadn’t been in the door that long, and I supposed this was just the way things were done. But I had a feeling that maybe it wasn’t the best way to do things." Warren Ellis |
Black Panther 2099 | In an interview, Evan Dorkin recalls how he turned
down an opportunity to write a Black Panther 2099 series. He also
mentions being offered X-Men 2099. Below is only a abridged excerpt.
You can read the full interview
here. You can also see the only surviving art from his proposal here. "I turned down a few mainstream jobs that might have done well for me back in the 90′s. [I was offered] a gig to co-develop and co-write X-Men 2099, and write a Black Panther 2099 series...In the case of the Black Panther 2099 job, I didn’t feel I could pull off writing the African characters convincingly and accurately. At least not back then. Even now, I’d only attempt something like that after doing some massive amounts of research. I had an overview for a 12-issue arc, which I liked very much, [with] a new origin for a female descendant of T’Challa, a supporting cast, [and] villains...." Evan Dorkin Interview on Comicattack.net 5/15/2010 |
Fight Man 2099 | On his own website, Evan Dorkin revealed that he
pitched a 10 page story about his Fight Man character.
"A "Fight-Man 2099" 10 page story was almost done for 2099 Unlimited, Joey Cavalieri okayed the pitched idea, but I never had the time to do the story -- which was about F-M finally getting paroled because it was cruel to keep him in jail for a century after the end of the first book." Evan Dorkin House of Fun Interactive Interview! Projects outside of the House! 1997 |
Knight Raven 2099 | A 2099 version of the Marvel UK character,
Night
Raven was proposed, but ultimately went unmade. Written and
drawn by Simon Wyatt, Simon has posted four
pages of art from the proposal on his Deviant Art account.
Check them out here.
"If I remember it correctly, it was set in an apocalyptic future version of Paris, involved an armoured (K)Night Raven (cybernetic as tho' immortal he had lost some limbs in battle, possibly by an explosion or cut off by an encounter with someone possessing adamantium :-) The premise was that
Knight Raven was sent on a quest to locate the illegitimate daughter
of China White (Yi Yang) by the future Paris resistance. Yi Yi
(Yang's daughter) held the genetic key to finally destroying both Yi
Yang and Knight Raven's immortality, bringing him peace and ridding
Paris of the criminal tyranny of Yi Yang who had held the city in
thrall employing her Cyber Ninjas." |
Captain America 2099 | Brazilian writer and artist Emir Ribeiro pitched his own version of Captain America 2099. He wrote and drew two pages for his proposal. The second of the two pages he drew surfaced at auction, unfortunately I didn't see it in time to bid. The website credits the artwork to Mark Millar, but I emailed Emir and he identified the artwork as his. You can still see the auction page with the image there. Enjoy it while it lasts, it will probably be gone one day.
